How it works

Safeguards that step in for you

  1. 1

Shield the apps that trip you up

Pick the apps and websites where you tend to slip. Shield puts a safeguard on each one, so opening it on autopilot gives you a moment to stop.

  2. 2

Start a session when you use them

Tap the shield to start a session. While you use your shielded apps, Shield checks your screen right on your iPhone, every few seconds.

  3. 3

If something shows up, Shield steps in

Your apps lock for a cooldown you choose, your why fills the screen, and the supporters you've red-flagged in Relay get a heads-up.

Cooldown

Caught in the moment

When sensitive content appears, Shield locks your shielded apps until a timer runs out. A pause long enough for the urge to pass.

  • You choose the cooldown length
  • Detection happens on your iPhone, not in the cloud

Accountability

Loop in the people who have your back

Red-flag a Relay supporter or your whole team. When Shield catches something, Relay lets them know, so the hard conversation starts without you having to start it.

  • Works with the supporters and teams you already have in Relay
  • They learn that something was caught, never what it was

Your why

See your why when it matters most

Add a photo and a few words about who you're doing this for. Shield puts them on screen every time it steps in. Prefer Scripture? Choose a rotating Bible verse instead.

Restrictions

Time limits and schedules, too

Cap social media and short-form video each day, and block apps and websites overnight or during work hours. Guardrails for the times you already know are hard.

  • Daily time limits for groups of apps
  • Schedules for overnight and work hours

Relay Shield just shuts down the app before my brain can even register what’s on screen.

FAQs

Questions about Shield

Still wondering whether it’s right for you? Reach out — we’re real people and we’ll help.

What is Relay Shield?

Relay Shield is a companion app to Relay. It blocks harmful content, puts safeguards on the apps where you tend to slip, and checks your screen for sensitive content while you use them. When it catches something, it can give your Relay supporters a heads-up.

Do I need Relay to use Shield?

No. Shield works on its own, but it works best with Relay. With a Relay account, you can red-flag a supporter or team so they get a heads-up when Shield steps in, using the people you're already connected with in Relay.

Does Shield take screenshots or send my screen anywhere?

No. Detection runs on your device, every few seconds during a session. Your screen and your browsing history aren't uploaded, and supporters are only told that something was caught, never what it was or which site.

Which apps can I shield?

Any app on your iPhone, plus specific websites. Most people start with social media, short-form video, and their browser, the places where scrolling turns into slipping. A few streaming apps, like Netflix and Disney+, don't allow screen monitoring, so Shield can't see inside them, but you can still set time limits and schedules for them.

What happens when Shield catches something?

Your shielded apps lock for a cooldown you choose, your why (a photo and your own words, or a rotating Bible verse) appears on screen, and any supporter or team you've red-flagged in Relay gets a heads-up.

Can I just turn it off?

Not on impulse. Someone you trust (a sponsor, partner or friend) sets a 4-digit PIN, and Shield asks for it before your protection can be loosened.
